Notes on Jacek Dukaj, my favorite Polish writer. Official website.
Dukaj uses a number of idiosyncratic concepts & terms, which I documented here.
Concepts
Post-Literate Culture (Cywilizacja postpiśmienna) - civilisation which no longer uses text/literature/written word as its primary mean of communication. Instead of them it uses direct experience transfer.
Direct Experience Transfer (Bezpośredni Transfer Przeżyć) - means of communication enabled by digital technology. Starting from radio/television, through video chats, VR and social media, culminating in direct streams of thoughts transmitted over brain implants or similar means.
Mindware (Myślunek) - bundle of cognitive habits and capacities that shapes an entire society, culture, politics, and morality. A "mode of thinking-and-perceiving", determined by used communication technologies. In Dukaj's theories, humans shifted from an Oral Mindware into Literate Mindware and are currently beginning the transition towards a Direct Experience Transfer Mindware.
Terms
Nolensum (mix of latin terms) - overwhelming feeling of unwillingness, psychological state frequently occuring in post-scarsity civilisations. Close to depression, not the same. Cannot write a better definition at this point.
In a half-blind (pöłzaślep) - when a character augumented with a brain implant is using around half of their perception to interact with the digital world, only partially present in reality. Examples: characters piloting complex machines, characters discussing and gathering related data at the same time.
In a full blind (pełny zaślep) - next step from being in a half-blind - allocating the entirety of your perception apparatus to the digital realms. Deep work/research, computer games.
Other words.
